North Queensland Toyota Cowboys players Robert Derby, Viliami Vailea and Murray Taulagi swapped their training kit for bunny ears to deliver Easter cheer to patients and families at Townsville University Hospital today.

The trio delivered chocolate eggs, played games, coloured in or just stopped in to say hi and grab a photo with patients, their loved ones, and staff in the Children’s Ward as part of the special Cowboys in Capes visit, presented by Sun Metals and delivered in collaboration with Brighter Lives Townsville Hospital Foundation.

Enjoying his second player hospital visit Cowboys Winger Robert Derby said it was a humbling experience.

“It was awesome to see the kids and their family members light up when we walked into their hospital rooms, especially when they saw our bunny ears and Easter baskets” Derby said.

“At my first hospital visit I didn’t really understand the positive impact we can have just by simply spending a little time with patients, but then I found out it had actually made a huge difference to a young boy’s recovery.

“It was extra special being able to get into the Easter spirit and the staff were excited to see us too, so I hope we have given everyone some great memories and inspiration to help the kids feel better.”

Brighter Lives Townsville Hospital Foundation CEO Stephanie Naunton said the Cowboys visit brightened the day for entire Children’s Ward.

"A simple smile or high-five from their heroes can make all the difference in taking their mind off a challenging time of being in hospital," Stephanie said.

"Hospital stays can be tough, especially over Easter. Having the Cowboys visit helps bring a much-needed boost to everyone’s spirits spending time in hospital this Easter,” she said.

Sun Metals HR and Communications Manager Jessica Jenkins said the refinery was proud to support the Cowboys Community Foundation with a number of initiatives, including Cowboys in Capes.

“For us it is about providing support to organisations who generously and continuously offer practical, meaningful support to the people in our community,” she said.

“While we are busy refining zinc, we love that the Cowboys are out in the community putting smiles on faces and making a real difference to the next generation.”
