A shared vision for supporting the rugby league family united North Queensland Toyota Cowboys head coach Todd Payten and Family of League’s Townsville committee at their first club function for 2023, marking 15 years of partnership between the club and foundation.
‘The Sherriff’ joined Family of League (formerly Men of League) Townsville members as a guest speaker at their annual general meeting, speaking of his and his family’s love for the region and the greatest game of all.
Reiterating his support for the vital work Family of League does in support of the rugby league community during times of hardship and crisis, Payten also threw his support behind the name change which is now inclusive of all those who contribute to the game.
It comes as the Cowboys extend their partnership with Family of League with a memorandum of understanding that will continue to raise awareness for the assistance and support Family of League can offer the North Queensland rugby league community.
Cowboys CEO Jeff Reibel said the MOU continues a long-standing friendship forged with the opening of Family of League’s Townsville chapter in 2008.
“The North Queensland Toyota Cowboys are proud to once again partner with Family of League to drive mutually beneficial outcomes for the local and wider rugby league community,” he said.
“Rugby league is part of the fabric of North Queensland, from Cape York to Rockhampton, and west to the border; and it’s so important to look after those who give so much to this great game.
“Unfortunately, nobody is immune to tough times, and we welcome the rebrand to Family of League to embrace and support everyone in the rugby league community in times of need.”
Since their establishment in 2002, FOL has provided over $10 million of financial support and 10,000 hours of volunteer service to men, women and children in rugby league.
Family of League’s decision to rebrand from Men of League reflects the foundation’s growth and evolution to support all those who have contributed to the rugby league community and find themselves in financial, social or emotional need.
The decision was made following broad consultation, with the new name reflecting, representing, respecting and supporting all those who love the game.
Family of League CEO Stephen Lowndes said the rebranding clearly signals to everyone in the rugby league family that FOL is there for them.
“For more than 20 years, we have supported the family of league, and now our name says so,” he said.
“From the juniors on the field to fundraising committees, from canteen workers to support volunteers; we are a family, united by our shared passion for rugby league.
“Whether you’re a fan, member, donor, partner or sponsor; there is space at our table for all who love the game.”
