Cowboys duo named in Kangaroos Form Team of the Month

With the Kangaroos heading to England in October to try and defend their World Cup crown, players across the NRL will be out to stake their claims for a berth in Mal Meninga's Kangaroos squad.

Form at NRL level will determine who makes the Origin sides mid-season and those NSW and Queensland players will have the inside running for a green and gold jersey.

Every month this season, for a series presented by Gallagher, retired greats Steve Renouf, Josh Morris and Michael Morgan will select a 17-man Australian squad with a composite team then assembled based on their most popular picks.

Renouf played 11 Tests for his country and scored Australia's only try in the 1992 World Cup final triumph over England at Wembley while Morgan was part of the Kangaroos side that beat England 6-0 in Brisbane in the 2017 World Cup final.

Morris played six Tests for Australia and was part of Australia's successful 2013 World Cup campaign.

There will be a final team announced at the end of the season.

Incumbency and career achievements won't be part of the selection criteria, it's all about form, so the trio's teams aren't necessarily a reflection of who they believe should make Australia's next official side.

A very settled backline from our experts with James Tedesco, Josh Addo-Carr, Valentine Holmes and Brian To'o all voted in multiple teams while Stephen Crichton also remains at centre after his recent form for the Panthers. 

Matt Burton was a popular selection in the halves, with Ben Hunt narrowly edging out Sharks playmaker Nicho Hynes to claim the number seven jersey — Hynes instead dropping back to the bench alongside three other NSW-eligible forwards in Payne Haas, Angus Crichton and Hudson Young.

Junior Paulo and Patrick Carrigan were voted as the props while Rabbitohs rake Damien Cook narrowly claimed the hooking duties from Reed Mahoney and Reece Robson, who have been in good form the Eels and Cowboys respectively.

North Queensland tyro Jeremiah Nanai remains on the edge with Rabbitohs powerhouse Keaon Koloamatangi, while Panthers skipper Isaah Yeo remains at lock as he has done throughout the majority of the 2022 season so far.

Joseph Suaalii continues to impress with each passing week and earns a spot on the wing in Morgan's side while underrated hooker Reece Robson continues to impress for the top-four-bound Cowboys. Liam Martin earns a spot alongside Jeremiah Nanai after returning well from his Origin commitments, while it's a NSW-heavy bench from Morgan with Jack Wighton joining Sharks halfback Nicho Hynes, Raiders edge forward Hudson Young and Roosters lock Victor Radley.

Jesse Ramien's attacking prowess at the Sharks sees him clinch a centre spot in Josh Morris' side with Hynes moving into the starting side alongside Burton. Up front, Josh Papalii joins Junior Paulo as the props with Patrick Carrigan's form for the Maroons and Broncos pushing Panthers skipper Isaah Yeo the bench where he joins Reagan Campbell-Gillard and Dragons pair Blake Lawrie and Ben Hunt.

The form of Latrell Mitchell wasn't quite enough to usurp James Tedesco in the number one jersey but it's enough to get him out of position in the centres for Steve Renouf's side, while his Rabbitohs teammate Damien Cook gets the nod at hooker after an impressive month in the cardinal and myrtle. Angus Crichton's prominence in the Roosters' resurgence sees him start in the back row, with two Blues and two Maroons rounding out Renouf's versatile bench selections.
