The 18-year-old has extended his contract with the club until the end of the 2018 season.

“I’m really excited to stay here and I wanted to show some loyalty to the Cowboys," Hess said.

A Mt Isa product, Hess began his first year in the Cowboys NYC program at 17, and has become a permanent fixture in the NYC under-20s with 17 games under his belt so far.

“I feel really comfortable in Townsville. I feel my football is thriving under the great staff at the Cowboys and I love playing with the boys here and look forward to some great results this season,” he said.

The 112kg second-rower was part of the Townsville Stingers under-18 side that won the national under-18s competition last year.

He scored two tries against the Roosters in the final and was selected for the Queensland under-18s squad.

Cowboys recruitment manager Clint Zammit said Hess has a big future in the game.

“Coen has a great shape for a back-rower. He’s an intelligent player and we look forward to him continuing to develop at the Cowboys.

“We're delighted he has committed long-term to the club.”
